The New Screen Of RX200S Is nice !

While the screen is smaller on the RX200 and reads horizontally, I prefer it to the larger screen and "upright" orientation of the RX200S . The font on the original screen is clear and easily readable, whereas the new "improved" screen uses block lettering.that may be stylish but is anything but user-friendly. In addition, I find menu navigation simpler and more intuitive on the older RX200. Finally, the new screen is considerably dimmer. Overall, the RX200S screen display aggravates me every time I have to look at it. The one feature I like about the new screen is the option of either a battery bar or a numerical percentage of remaining battery charge. That's nice.

Tweens and OTC Medication: Scholastic and Poison Control Team Up to Educate

With the cold and flu season fast-approaching, it's important for parents and teachers to discuss the dangers of over-the-counter (OTC) medication with their tweens and students. In 2011, poison centers managed over 260,000 exposure cases in children ages 6 to 19; 143,000 cases involved medication errors and misuse.

Recently, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), and children's education company, Scholastic, collaborated to aid in this important conversation.

The partnership between AAPCC and Scholastic called, The OTC Literacy Program provides literature and infographics to classrooms across the United States. The information is targeted to tweens (5th and 6th grade), who frequently self-administer assorted OTC medications from cold tablets to ibuprofen.

With the increase in latchkey kids, some home alone before school and after, the focus is on education. According to an OTC Literacy Medicine Fact, most adolescents think OTC drugs are safer than those prescribed by a doctor. This is a dangerous assumption.

Part of the information covered in the classroom literature focuses on basic safety rules for all medications:

Tweens should only use OTC medicines with permission and supervision from their parent or guardian.
Always read and follow the Drug Facts label, and never take more than what’s directed on the label.

Always use the dosing device that comes with medicine. Never use household measurement tools like teaspoons, tablespoons or kitchen spoons.

On the Scholastic website, The OTC Literacy page provides a bounty of free information for parents including infographics that can be printed out for discussion and future reference. One particularly helpful sheet titled, “What’s on the Label,” provides a full-color drug label with detailed sections explaining dosage, ingredients, warnings and other vital information.

4. Step to the Side

This exercise is a bit tougher, but it will sculpt your behind one cheek at a time. Once you get accustomed to it, it’s much easier to stay balanced.

Assume the lunge position, but step forward and to the right to dip into the lunge. Feel the burn on the right cheek as you push back to your original position. Repeat with the left leg for an even workout.

Reps: 15 to 20 per leg

5. Step Back

The rear lunge focuses a bit more on the thighs than the hamstrings/glutes, but it’s great for giving your legs a defined look that will help your butt stand out.

Assume the lunge position–feet spread shoulder width apart, hands on hips–but this time step backwards. Dip until the front leg has reached the 90-degree angle, and push the back foot forward to return to your starting position.

6. Step to the Wall

Wall squats are a static exercise that will have your legs quivering in no time. It’s much easier on your knees than regular squats, but no less punishing for your muscles.

3. Orange and Dill Parchment Salmon: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Season two (6 oz. fillets of salmon with sea salt and pepper. Place each salmon fillet in middle of a (15-square-inch) piece of parchment; drizzle with two tbsp. olive oil and two tbsp. freshly squeezed orange juice. Collect sides of parchment over salmon to form a pouch leaving no openings. Place packages onto a baking sheet in oven and cook for twenty minutes. Transfer to plates and carefully open packages to release steam before serving. Plate salmon; garnish with two tbsp. fresh dill and two cups Earthbound Farm Organic Kale Blend. Serve warm.

4. Gluten-Free Pizza: Lay one lb. of gluten-free pizza dough flat on a baking sheet or pizza stone. Growing up, I was always in to food (as my fat cheeks suggested). I have multiethnic parents my brother, a Scottish/Swiss/Italian raised in Georgia and my brother, a proud Filipina who met in Japan and honeymooned in Kenya. Needless to say, there was no shortage of flavor in our household cooking.

One of my favourite dishes to cook was fried rice. They always had a stocked rice cooker prepared, which made it simple. Flash forward to present time. My husband and I ate our weight in croissants on our honeymoon, and when they returned they knew they needed to lighten up our eating. This fresh, un-fried rice was the ideal balance to represent home cooking they love and healthy eating they were craving.

Ingredients: (makes for)
one 1/2 cups cooked white jasmine or short-grain rice
one shredded boiled chicken breast
two cloves of garlic
four tablespoons reduced sodium gluten-free tamari sauce
four teaspoons sesame oil
6 shelled and deveined large shrimp
Canola oil spray
two large eggs
1/3 cup fresh shredded carrots
1/3 cup fresh English peas
Chopped green onion for garnish
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions: Cook rice in rice cooker or on the stovetop for about 30 minutes or until fluffy. While rice is cooking, boil the chicken breast. While that is cooking, mince the garlic and add to a medium bowl with the tamari, sesame oil, and shrimp. Cover and refrigerate until the chicken breast is boiled and no longer pink inside. Let chicken chilled, then shred it along with your hands and set aside. On medium-high heat, place your marinated shrimp and the liquid in a medium pan and cook until plump, then add the shredded chicken for only a minute to coat in the juices. Prep another smaller pan with canola oil and turn to high heat. Crack egg at a time in to the pan to fry eggs (but make positive the yolks will still run).

Put 3/4 cup of cooked rice onto each plate, slide the shrimp and chicken mixture from the pan onto each rice mound, sprinkle on the peas and carrots, and top with those crispy-edged fried eggs. Garnish with green onion, drizzle with tamari, sprinkle with salt and fresh ground pepper, and voila!

Denied weight-loss surgery because he is a man

A Wellington man was horrified to be told he would not get taxpayer-funded weight-loss surgery because he is a man.

Ron Blair, 68, who weighs 132 kilograms, was referred for the potentially life-saving operation by his heart specialist in July but turned down by Capital and Coast District Health Board, which began funding a handful of weight-loss operations two years ago.

In a letter to his specialist, surgeon Kusal Wickremesekera revealed that "as a male, [Mr Blair] falls outside our current guidelines for surgery" but his case could be reconsidered in future.

Mr Blair, a former chief cook on Cook Strait ferry Arahura, said he briefly contemplated a sex change. "In a fit of pique I dashed off a fax to [Health Minister] Tony Ryall asking him whether I'd qualify if I had a sex change. I've paid tax for over 40 years and believe I'm entitled to the stomach bypass surgery."

Capital and Coast said there was no gender bias. Director of surgery John Riordan said the board made the clinical decision to exclude more-complex patients initially (including males), as the two surgeons were still learning the procedure.

"The surgery is clinically more complex on men due to the way body fat is distributed [around the abdomen]."

Five patients got taxpayer-funded surgery through a private contract with Wakefield Hospital in 2007-08, four in 2008-09, and the board has budgeted for seven to have operations this year.

The board was taking referrals for both genders and patients previously turned down could be reconsidered, Dr Riordan said.

Wakefield Hospital specialist Richard Stubbs, who has been supervising the two public surgeons and helped select their patients, said gastric bypasses were highly dangerous.

A study in The New England Journal of Medicine found 2.1 deaths per 100 patients at 10 centres in the US.

"That's 10 times my rate I’ve had two deaths in about 1200 operations but it's very easy to get a death.”

Dr Stubbs said the wording of the letter which was not meant to be seen by the patient had been "unfortunate", but there were other more serious factors than his gender that ruled Mr Blair out for surgery. He suffers from ailments including breathlessness, heart disease, vascular disease, diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea.

With 1000 Capital and Coast patients who could benefit from the operation, it made sense to do less-risky patients first, who had the best chance of surviving surgery.

"In theory, one could drop as much as 20 pounds in a week following a very ambitious eating and exercise plan , devoting more than seven hours per week to rigorous exercise, and under a physician's care like we do on the television program," he says.

But even if you can't drop everything to go to weight loss "boot camp," you can safely lose 3 or more pounds a week at home with a healthy diet and lots of exercise, says weight loss counselor Katherine Tallmadge, RD.

In fact, having a goal like a looking great at a wedding or reunion can be a great motivator, as long as you follow a weight loss plan that you can keep up after the special event.

But you need to plan ahead and allow enough time to make changes to your shape.

"Don't wait until one week before the reunion to try and lose 10 pounds," advises Tara Gidus, MS, RD, team dietitian for the Orlando Magic.

The Secrets to Fast Weight Loss

Losing weight is a simple mathematical formula: You need to burn more calories than you eat. Experts generally recommend creating a deficit of 500 calories per day through a combination of eating fewer calories and increasing physical activity. Over the course of a week, this should yield a loss of about 1-2 pounds of fat.

If you want to lose weight faster, you'll need to eat less and exercise more. Bottom line: 1,050 to 1,200 calories and one hour of exercise a day (but be sure not to dip below this calorie level for safety's sake). On this type of plan, you can expect to lose 3-5 pounds the first week, or more if you weigh over 250 pounds.

"Dieters who follow the plan can lose 2 pounds from diet and 1 pound from exercise each week, and even more if they have more to lose, because the more fat you have to lose, the faster it comes off,"says Dansinger.

You may lose even more weight initially if you limit salt and starches.

"When you reduce sodium and cut starches, you reduce fluids and fluid retention, which can result in up to 5 pounds of fluid loss when you get started," explains Dansinger.

Diets for Fast Weight Loss

When it comes to weight loss, calories count the most, says Dansinger. He recommends cutting back to a daily level of 7 calories per pound of your current body weight (which for a 200-pound person, for example, would be 1,400 calories), but no less than 1,050 calories/day (the lowest level that can be done safely at home). Dietitians more typically recommend 1,200 calories as a daily minimum.

Dansinger advocates a diet that minimizes starches, (even healthy whole grains should be controlled), added sugars, and animal fat from meat and dairy foods. For rapid weight loss , dieters should eat mainly fruits, veggies, egg whites, soy products, skinless poultry breasts, fish, shellfish, nonfat dairy foods, and 95% lean meat.

He notes that there are other ways to control calories, such as minimizing total fat, but believes that tends to be more challenging than his suggested weight loss plan.

Other experts interviewed by WebMD recommended tactics including drinking lots of water, eating plenty of protein , and keeping a food journal.

"Eat enough protein and distribute it evenly through your meals to minimize muscle loss and maximize fat loss," says Tallmadge, author of Diet Simple, who also advises clients to swap out carbs in favor of veggies.

American Dietetic Association spokesperson Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, recommends:

Eat plenty of low-calorie vegetables to help you feel full.
Drink plenty of water so you don't confuse hunger with thirst.
Clear the house of tempting foods.
Stay busy to prevent eating out of boredom.
Eat only from a plate, while seated at a table.
Always eat three meals and one snack daily — no skipping meals.

Australian tech start-up Calico questions Google’s use of its name

When technology giant Google announced a new healthcare and biotechnology company, Calico, earlier this month, the founders of an Australian start-up in a related industry with the same name raised an eyebrow.

Co-founder and technical director of the fitness and health system Calico Jack Owens told Fairfax Media Google had made a "mistake" by using his company's name.

"It's clearly in the same space and we're doing the same thing," said Owens, 25.

Owens founded the Perth start-up with his dad Kevin, 45. The four-year-old company provides apps and an online system for fitness and health.

It has attracted about $850,000 in venture capital, $250,000 of which came from the federal government-backed Commercialisation Australia.

Calico — the name stands for"calories in, calories out" — has an online system and iPhone app for users to track whether they are reaching their fitness goals. The app was promoted as "new and noteworthy" in the health and fitness section of Apple's App Store when launched in March. The company also recently partnered with Diabetes Australia to offer the latter's 1.1 million members access to Calico's iPhone application.

"The app is a fitness tracking app that enables users to sign up, set their goals and achieve them with GPS tracking technology,"said Owens.

"It's about rewarding them and it's about achieving daily goals to try and knock off each day your activity goals to achieve the overall goal which might be weight loss or to get fit."

Owens wants the tech giant to explain the oversight.

He has organised a teleconference to be held with Google's trademark attorney on Tuesday (US time) to discuss the matter.

Fairfax Media sought comment from Google on Sunday but it hasn't yet responded.

"[It's] very confusing [having two companies with the same name].We just don't want to be disregarded," Owens said.

"We have trademarks for Calico in the US, the UK and Australia. We double checked them all and they're all in the same class. As far as being upset? We're not upset with Google yet.

"Mistakes can be made and we're going through a procedure with Google and with our legal advisers as to the next step.”

A Resolution for Weight Loss

But Weight Watchers taught me how to make smarter decisions about what I'm putting into my body. Now I can still eat as much as I want, as long as I'm making the right choices. I'll eat a big ol' pile of carrots instead of a big ol'pile of French fries.

Another hard part was changing my social life. I started saying no to happy hours and social drinking, which really made a huge difference. You don't realize how many calories are in alcohol.

My two dogs were a big help when it came to my exercise routine. I began walking them farther and more often. I also began working out more often at the gym and incorporating weight machines and lots of sit ups. I also ride my bike a lot.

While I used to treat myself with high-calorie foods, now I find other ways to reward myself. I'll go to a movie, get a pedicure, go shopping or even plan a trip. My husband and I love to travel. Thinking about a tropical getaway and getting into a bikini also keeps me on track. When I have to choose between looking hot in a bikini or eating a slice of chocolate cake, I pick the bikini!

Today I can face myself in the mirror — something I used to dread. I wear two-piece swimsuits with pride. I fit into designer denim and can wear high heels without pain.
